Seven Year Old Boys are Stupid

And I have two of them in the house. 

Granted, one has been 7 for nine months and the other for four whole days, but I’m starting to believe that they are truly incapable of not hitting other cars when they open the back door of the Honda or following directions or thinking just a little ahead or walking without dragging their feet or driving me crazy. 

Even the ol’ man sees it. He is the one who came into the bedroom after taking them all to school and simply said, “Babe, the boys are stupid, and it only gets worse, I was the same way.” Lord help me.

They forget their homework and lose their toys and leave their coats and after taking showers they cannot comprehend why they should put on clean underwear and socks. Although they have a perfectly normal light switch in their room, neither bothers with a simple flick of the wrist to turn it off. Ever. 

For dinner I made hamburgers in the oven. It was their job to clean the kitchen after we ate, something that all my children have been trained in and know how to do. Upon my inspection, they had the filthy, dirty, crusty pan on the clean dishes, and when asked why it wasn’t washed, they simply stated “it is.” Here it is now, 3 hours after bedtime and I felt the need to check the oven. Upon opening, it contained clean pans (its where we keep them) and to my dismay...the other cookie sheet of hamburgers. No wonder one boy was complaining that not all the pans fit!  

They are very well behaved and smart little boys. Developmentally, they are on track. I love them and thankfully I’ve been able to maintain my composure and I never want to lose the wonderful open conversations that I have with them. They are silly and imaginative and act like 7 year old boys, however I cannot ignore the lingering thought in my head; puberty is just around the corner.
